What Is Embryo Glue?

In recent weeks, the term "embryo glue" has been frequently discussed by patients, clinics, and embryologists alike. Although the name might sound a bit unusual, it refers to an advanced technology that can significantly increase the chances of successful embryo implantation during IVF. But why is interest in embryo glue growing now, especially in June, and how does it actually work?

What Is Embryo Glue?

Embryo glue is not an actual adhesive. It’s a specialized culture medium—a liquid into which the embryo is placed just before being transferred into the uterus. This liquid contains substances that mimic the natural uterine environment, helping the embryo attach more effectively to the endometrial lining.

The main component is hyaluronan (hyaluronic acid), a substance naturally found in the uterus. It also contains albumin and other molecules that support cell communication between the embryo and the uterine tissue.

How Does Embryo Glue Help?

The goal of embryo glue is to create optimal conditions for the critical moment when the embryo is returned to the woman’s body. This stage is one of the most delicate phases in the entire IVF process—even a healthy embryo might fail to implant if the conditions aren’t ideal.

According to a Cochrane systematic review (Maheshwari et al., 2012), using a hyaluronan-enriched transfer medium can lead to a significant increase in clinical pregnancy rates, particularly in women with previous failed IVF cycles.

A large clinical trial (Urman et al., 2008) also found that embryo implantation was successful in 34% of cases using embryo glue, compared to 23% without it.

Why Is It So Popular in June?

June has long been a time when many couples plan cross-border IVF treatments and hope to spend the summer preparing for pregnancy. As patients and clinics look for ways to maximize success, embryo glue often comes up as a promising support technique.

Additionally, some clinics offer promotional packages or discounts in June that include embryo glue, further increasing awareness and interest.

Is Embryo Glue Suitable for Everyone?

Not necessarily. While some studies show promising results, others suggest the effect may vary between patients. The European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) states in its 2023 recommendations that embryo glue may benefit patients with low implantation potential, but that individual assessment is necessary.

It is most commonly recommended for:

  • Women with repeated failed IVF cycles
  • Cases of poor implantation response
  • Single embryo transfers, where maximizing success is critical

Can We Transport Embryos with Embryo Glue?

Embryos are transported while cryopreserved (vitrified) in liquid nitrogen, so embryo glue is not involved during the transport. It is applied only shortly before embryo transfer at the destination clinic. At Biocouriers, we ensure your embryo arrives safely, on time, and in perfect condition—whether or not embryo glue is part of your treatment plan.
