Smart AI, safe flight

The field of assisted reproduction (IVF) is undergoing its biggest technological revolution in decades. Until recently, embryology laboratories relied almost exclusively on a specialist's trained eye and a microscope, but now artificial intelligence (AI) is entering the process in with significant impacts. Advanced algorithms can analyze time-lapse images of embryos, evaluate their division dynamics, and accurately identify the most promising embryo for transfer. AI also currently helps with selecting high-quality sperm or predicting treatment success rates. Technologies offer hope for cycle success rates higher than ever before. 

However, there is one major "but" that often gets overlooked amidst the flood of encouraging  news from the labs.

No matter how sophisticated the computer program that selects the best embryo, it remains a microorganism stored at temperatures around −196 °C. As soon as the need arises to transport this embryo to another clinic – due to patient relocation, specialized care abroad, or changes in legislation, for example – even the best data and algorithms take a backseat. Why Can't Even the Most Advanced AI Help at the Airport?

1. The Risk of Airport X-ray Scanners

Standard X-ray beams used for luggage at airports pose a fundamental risk to genetic material, as radiation can damage cellular DNA. Standard freight or cargo shipping services often route packages through automated sorting belts where X-ray scanning is mandatory and automatic. No AI algorithm in the laboratory can prevent damage caused by radiation during transit.
